Oklahoma Governor Signs Bills Boosting School Security

    April 16, 2013

    News(.com

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has signed into law four school safety bills that were introduced after last year's elementary school shooting rampage in Newtown, Conn.

The bills establish a school safety institute and tells schools to run intruder drills, report firearms found on campus and share their emergency plans with local emergency responders. The bills came from a committee led by Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb that studied school safety after a man killed 20 schoolchildren and six adults in Connecticut in December.

School officials and law enforcement officers from around the state say the bills could provide valuable attention and a starting point, but they say the bills won't change much of how they currently deal with safety issues.

The bills met near-universal praise in the state legislature.
